Vitamin D Deficiency & Infertility Causes

Vitamin D deficiency occurs when the body does not have enough vitamin D to maintain good health. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for strong bones. It also plays an important role in supporting the immune system, muscles, and nervous system.

Most people with vitamin D deficiency may not show any symptoms. However, those with severe deficiency might experience:

  • Recurrent infections
  • Bone pain
  • Weakened or fragile bones

  • Moderate sun exposure is the best natural way to maintain healthy vitamin D levels.
  • The amount of vitamin D produced from sunlight depends on:
    • Time of day
    • Skin tone (lighter skin produces vitamin D more quickly than darker skin)
    • Amount of skin exposed to sunlight
  • Apart from sun exposure, there are limited natural food sources of vitamin D, such as:
    • Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel)
    • Beef liver
    • Cheese
    • Mushrooms
    • Egg yolks
  • To help meet daily requirements, many foods are fortified with vitamin D, including:
    • Dairy products
    • Orange juice
    • Breakfast cereals
    • Infant formula

A recently discovered component that affects fertility is vitamin D. Studies show that deficiency in vitamin D frequently lowers the likelihood of pregnancy in women undergoing IVF.

The study also demonstrated that women with appropriate vitamin D levels produce eggs of higher quality and achieve successful embryo implantation than do those with inadequate vitamin D levels. Women with vitamin D deficiency had significantly decreased overain reserves.
